Notable places within about 40 km — shown as straight-line (air) distance, not travel distance
Sky Lagoon is a modern geothermal spa on the Kársnes shoreline in Kópavogur, built into the coastal rocks. Its infinity-edge pool looks straight out over the North Atlantic, so soaking in the warm water feels like drifting toward the horizon. There are saunas, a cold plunge and a bar within the facility.
Bessastaðir stands on a low, windswept headland of the Álftanes peninsula, facing the sea. The white house with red roof is the official residence of the President of Iceland, surrounded by lawns, a small church and views over the bay to Reykjavík. It is a peaceful, understated place, quite different from a typical tourist attraction.
The beach was created in 2000 by pumping geothermal water into a lagoon and adding golden shell sand, so that the temperature is far warmer than the surrounding North Atlantic. The geothermal heating is produced by the city's hot water network. It is a fine example of how Reykjavík uses its geothermal resources for leisure as well as heating.
