The name means "valley of the hot springs", because natural hot water bubbled out of the ground here. Reykjavík's women once carried their laundry to the springs to wash it, and the site was an important part of daily life until the early 20th century. Today the valley is the city's main sports and leisure district.
Perlan sits on top of Öskjuhlíð hill, crowned with a shimmering glass dome built on six giant hot water tanks. Inside, the museum explores Iceland's natural wonders with interactive exhibits, a planetarium and a real indoor ice cave. A viewing deck wraps around the dome, giving wide views over Reykjavík, the sea and the mountains.
The beach was created in 2000 by pumping geothermal water into a lagoon and adding golden shell sand, so that the temperature is far warmer than the surrounding North Atlantic. The geothermal heating is produced by the city's hot water network. It is a fine example of how Reykjavík uses its geothermal resources for leisure as well as heating.
