Borgarnes
Borgarnes is the main town of West Iceland, built on a small peninsula in Borgarfjörður — a historic Saga-era settlement area and now a common rest stop for traffic heading north or into the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
📍 right in the heart of Borgarnes.
The Settlement Center museum covers the Icelandic sagas in detail if you have time between bus connections.

It is the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe, pouring out roughly 180 litres of water per second at nearly 100 degrees Celsius. Much of the water is piped to the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes to heat homes, and some goes to greenhouses where vegetables and flowers are grown. It's a good illustration of Iceland's geothermal power.
The most popular route leads up to a stone landmark, around the halfway mark, and takes a couple of hours. A more demanding path continues toward the summit ridge, with steep, loose sections that should be avoided in poor weather or when there is snow. Bring water, windproof layers and sturdy boots, and check the forecast before you set off.
