Mosfellsbær
Mosfellsbær is a separate town at the northeastern edge of the capital area, set among hills and rivers rather than coastline — known for salmon fishing, hiking trails, and a strong outdoor, small-town character.
📍 toward the south-east of Mosfellsbær.
This town has a distinctly different, more rural feel than the rest of the capital area — a good base if you want quiet evenings with city access.

Mount Esja rises across the bay from Reykjavík, its long ridge changing colour with the light and the seasons. Several marked trails climb its slopes from a car park at the foot, and the views back across the bay to the capital, the sea and the mountains get better with every step.
Árbæjarsafn is an open-air museum in Reykjavík where a cluster of historic buildings has been gathered to form a small old town. Wander between wooden houses, a turf-roofed farm and a little church, with grazing animals and gardens adding to the atmosphere. Many buildings are furnished to show how people lived, worked and traded.
Joining locals in the hot pots is one of the most authentic things you can do in the city; bring a swimsuit and shower thoroughly first, as is the custom. The botanical garden is a peaceful stop in summer, and you could spend half a day in the area, especially with children. It is easy to reach by bus.
