The museum, part of the Reykjavík City Museum, began collecting buildings that were threatened by redevelopment in the city centre. Instead of demolishing them, they were moved here and restored. Together they give a vivid sense of how Reykjavík grew from a small fishing and farming settlement into a modern capital over the past two centuries.
Sky Lagoon is a modern geothermal spa on the Kársnes shoreline in Kópavogur, built into the coastal rocks. Its infinity-edge pool looks straight out over the North Atlantic, so soaking in the warm water feels like drifting toward the horizon. There are saunas, a cold plunge and a bar within the facility.
The beach was created in 2000 by pumping geothermal water into a lagoon and adding golden shell sand, so that the temperature is far warmer than the surrounding North Atlantic. The geothermal heating is produced by the city's hot water network. It is a fine example of how Reykjavík uses its geothermal resources for leisure as well as heating.
