The pond lies in a low hollow that was once outside the early town, and over the years the shoreline has been shaped and landscaped. Today it is bordered by the city hall, a church and well-known buildings, and it has been a favourite place for walks, picnics and birdwatching for generations of Reykjavík residents.
It is a good choice on a rainy day or if you cannot go out on a boat. Plan about an hour to an hour and a half, and note that the audio guide is available in several languages. The area around Grandi has cafés, food halls and a walk along the old harbour, so it combines well with lunch.
Opened in 2011, the building was designed by Henning Larsen Architects together with artist Ólafur Elíasson, who created the geometric glass façade. Its design draws on Iceland's basalt landscapes, and it later won the Mies van der Rohe Award for contemporary architecture. It now serves as the home of the national symphony and the opera.
