The ice comes from the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, which calves into the Jökulsárlón lagoon. Icebergs float out to sea through a short channel and are tossed back onto the beach by the surf, polished smooth by the saltwater. The black sand is volcanic in origin, formed from basalt eroded from the surrounding highlands.
Jökulsárlón is a spectacular glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland, where chunks of ice break from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier and drift slowly toward the sea. The icebergs vary in colour from clear blue to white to black with ash, and seals can often be seen swimming among them. The scenery is silent and awe-inspiring.
Fjallsárlón is a glacier lagoon in southeast Iceland, where icebergs float in front of the face of the Fjallsjökull glacier. It is quieter than its famous neighbour, and the ice here comes close enough that you can hear it crack and creak. Mountains and glacier tongues make a dramatic backdrop.
