The name means "waterfall of the gods". According to the saga tradition, when Iceland adopted Christianity around the year 1000, the lawspeaker Þorgeir threw statues of the old gods into the falls as a sign of the new faith. The falls are around 12 metres high and 30 metres wide.
The Mývatn Nature Baths are a geothermal bathing lagoon overlooking the lake and volcanic landscape of North Iceland. The water is a milky blue, rich in minerals, and several pools range from warm to hot. From the water you can look across steaming lava fields and the lake, and the atmosphere is quieter than at larger spas.
Dimmuborgir, or the "Dark Castles", is a maze of towering lava pillars, arches and caves near Lake Mývatn. Marked trails of different lengths wind between the formations, and a natural lava arch known as the church forms a hollow shelter. The shapes feel like ruins from another world.
