Árbær
Árbær is a residential suburb built from the 1970s onward around the Elliðaár river, home to the open-air Árbæjarsafn museum, which preserves historic Reykjavík buildings relocated from the old town centre.
📍 right in the heart of Árbær.
Árbæjarsafn is an open-air museum of old Reykjavík houses — a good stop if you're interested in the city's history away from the downtown crowds.

The museum, part of the Reykjavík City Museum, began collecting buildings that were threatened by redevelopment in the city centre. Instead of demolishing them, they were moved here and restored. Together they give a vivid sense of how Reykjavík grew from a small fishing and farming settlement into a modern capital over the past two centuries.
The name means "valley of the hot springs", because natural hot water bubbled out of the ground here. Reykjavík's women once carried their laundry to the springs to wash it, and the site was an important part of daily life until the early 20th century. Today the valley is the city's main sports and leisure district.
It's best to book ahead, particularly for evening and summer slots, and you should plan on two to three hours. The lagoon is a short drive or bus ride from central Reykjavík, which makes it a convenient alternative to the Blue Lagoon, especially if you are not heading toward the airport. Sunset sessions are especially atmospheric.
