🏔️ Nearby Sights

Notable places within about 40 km — shown as straight-line (air) distance, not travel distance

Svartifoss 0.5 km away (air distance)

The walk from the Skaftafell visitor centre is roughly 1.5 kilometres each way, uphill, and takes around 45 minutes one way. Wear good shoes, since parts of the path are steep, and bring layers. The trail also passes two smaller waterfalls, and there are longer hikes available from the same point if you want to explore further.

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon 29 km away (air distance)

The lagoon was formed as Fjallsjökull, an outlet glacier of the Öræfajökull ice cap, retreated and left behind a basin of meltwater. It lies at the foot of Öræfajökull, which includes Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland's highest peak. The lagoon is growing as the glacier shrinks, and the shoreline changes from year to year.

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon 36 km away (air distance)

The lagoon has grown rapidly since the glacier started retreating in the 20th century, and it is now one of the deepest lakes in Iceland. A short channel connects it to the Atlantic, so seawater flows in and out with the tides. This mix of fresh and salt water attracts fish and, in turn, seals and seabirds.
