It is a good choice on a rainy day or if you cannot go out on a boat. Plan about an hour to an hour and a half, and note that the audio guide is available in several languages. The area around Grandi has cafés, food halls and a walk along the old harbour, so it combines well with lunch.
The pond lies in a low hollow that was once outside the early town, and over the years the shoreline has been shaped and landscaped. Today it is bordered by the city hall, a church and well-known buildings, and it has been a favourite place for walks, picnics and birdwatching for generations of Reykjavík residents.
Grótta lighthouse stands at the far tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula, on a small island linked to the mainland by a narrow tidal causeway. The orange-and-white tower is surrounded by grass, rocks and seabirds, with the sea on every side and a wide sweep of coastline toward the mountains across the bay.
