Hafnarfjörður — Central & North
Hafnarfjörður's town centre sits on and around a genuine lava field — a distinctive landscape not found in Reykjavík proper — with an old harbour, a walkable main street, and Iceland's best-known 'elf' tourism.
📍 right in the heart of Hafnarfjörður — Central & North.
The old harbour area has a more small-town, fishing-village feel than downtown Reykjavík.

Hellisgerði is a small, charming park in the middle of Hafnarfjörður, set among dark lava outcrops. Winding paths lead between mossy rocks, flower beds, trees and little ponds, with quiet corners to sit and rest. It feels like a hidden garden tucked inside the town.
The site was once a farm owned by the medieval chieftain and writer Snorri Sturluson, and later a base for Danish officials. The house itself dates from the 18th century. It has served as the presidential residence since the early 1940s, around the time Iceland became an independent republic, which makes it an important symbol of the country's independence.
Opened in 2021, the spa takes inspiration from Icelandic bathing traditions and turf-house architecture. Guests follow a multi-step ritual that alternates warm water, cold plunge, sauna, steam and a skin scrub. The geothermal water is drawn from nearby sources and mixed to keep the lagoon at a comfortable temperature.
