🏔️ Nearby Sights

Notable places within about 40 km — shown as straight-line (air) distance, not travel distance

Skógafoss 0.8 km away (air distance)

Climb the stairs for the view from above, then continue along the river to see smaller waterfalls upstream. The area gets a lot of spray, so bring a rain jacket. The Skógar museum and the start of the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail are nearby. It is best photographed in the afternoon, when the sun hits the water.

Sólheimajökull Glacier Tongue 7 km away (air distance)

Sólheimajökull is a glacier tongue that creeps down from the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap, ending in a small lagoon of grey meltwater. A short walk from the car park leads to a viewpoint close to the glacier front. The ice is streaked with black volcanic ash, creating striking stripes of blue, white and dark grey.

Dyrhólaey 23 km away (air distance)

Parts of the headland can be closed in early summer to protect nesting birds, so check the current access. In July, puffins are often seen on the cliffs. The upper viewpoints are reached by a short drive up a steep road, and the wind can be strong. It combines naturally with nearby Reynisfjara and the village of Vík.
