Hafnarfjörður is famous in Icelandic folklore as a place where elves and hidden people are said to live in the lava. Many locals take such stories seriously, and building projects have been adjusted in the past to avoid disturbing certain rocks. The park was laid out in the early 20th century and has long been loved by residents.
The site was once a farm owned by the medieval chieftain and writer Snorri Sturluson, and later a base for Danish officials. The house itself dates from the 18th century. It has served as the presidential residence since the early 1940s, around the time Iceland became an independent republic, which makes it an important symbol of the country's independence.
Opened in 2021, the spa takes inspiration from Icelandic bathing traditions and turf-house architecture. Guests follow a multi-step ritual that alternates warm water, cold plunge, sauna, steam and a skin scrub. The geothermal water is drawn from nearby sources and mixed to keep the lagoon at a comfortable temperature.
