Garðabær & Álftanes
Garðabær is one of the more affluent municipalities in the capital area, a low-density mix of houses and quiet streets between Kópavogur and Hafnarfjörður, with Álftanes as its low-lying coastal peninsula.
📍 toward the south-east of Garðabær & Álftanes.
Bessastaðir, the official residence of Iceland's president, is out on the Álftanes peninsula — a quiet, low-key landmark rather than a tourist attraction.

The site was once a farm owned by the medieval chieftain and writer Snorri Sturluson, and later a base for Danish officials. The house itself dates from the 18th century. It has served as the presidential residence since the early 1940s, around the time Iceland became an independent republic, which makes it an important symbol of the country's independence.
It only takes about half an hour to wander through, which makes it an easy stop between shopping and a café visit in the centre of Hafnarfjörður. It is at its prettiest in summer, when the flowers are in bloom, and quiet in the evening. Look for the signs about hidden folk and elves, and ask the tourist office about guided walks.
Opened in 2021, the spa takes inspiration from Icelandic bathing traditions and turf-house architecture. Guests follow a multi-step ritual that alternates warm water, cold plunge, sauna, steam and a skin scrub. The geothermal water is drawn from nearby sources and mixed to keep the lagoon at a comfortable temperature.
