Ásbrú & Keilir
Ásbrú is a former US military base near Keflavík, repurposed since 2006 into housing, a university campus (Keilir), and business space — a distinctive, spread-out grid of Cold War–era buildings now serving civilian use.
📍 toward the south-west of Ásbrú & Keilir.
Keilir campus here draws a mix of students, adding a bit more life to what was once a closed military site.
Notable places within about 40 km — shown as straight-line (air) distance, not travel distance
The Bridge Between Continents is a small footbridge over a rift in the lava landscape of the Reykjanes peninsula. Standing on it, you can symbolically cross from the North American plate to the Eurasian plate in a few steps. The scene is a stretch of rugged, windswept lava, with the ocean in the distance.
A short walk around the boardwalks takes around half an hour. Keep to the paths, since the ground near the vents is scalding hot and can be unstable. The nearby Reykjanes lighthouse and the cliffs along the coast are worth a visit, and the area is often windy, so wear layers. Sulphur gives the air a distinct smell.
You must book your entry in advance, particularly in high season, and it is easy to combine with a flight, since the lagoon lies only about 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport. Shower thoroughly before getting in, protect your hair with conditioner, and allow at least two to three hours for the visit.
