Ásbrú & Keilir
Ásbrú is a former US military base near Keflavík, repurposed since 2006 into housing, a university campus (Keilir), and business space — a distinctive, spread-out grid of Cold War–era buildings now serving civilian use.
📍 toward the south-west of Ásbrú & Keilir.
The former military base layout gives this area a distinctive, spread-out grid that's different from typical Icelandic town planning.

The two tectonic plates are slowly pulling apart at roughly two centimetres a year, and Iceland sits right where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises above the sea. The visible fissures across Reykjanes are evidence of that movement. The bridge, completed in the early 2000s, was built as a symbolic link, and it honours the explorer Leifur Eiríksson.
The Blue Lagoon is Iceland's most famous geothermal spa, a milky turquoise pool set in a black lava field on the Reykjanes peninsula. The warm, mineral-rich water steams against the cold air, and bathers can apply silica mud masks and sip drinks from the in-water bar. The surrounding landscape is stark and otherworldly.
The area is named after Guðrún, known as Gunna, a ghost who was said to haunt local farms until a priest trapped her in the hot spring. Geologically, the field sits above the mid-Atlantic rift, and the steam is partly used by a geothermal power plant nearby. The nearby Reykjanes lighthouse dates from 1908 and replaced Iceland's very first lighthouse, which was lit in 1878.
