The pond lies in a low hollow that was once outside the early town, and over the years the shoreline has been shaped and landscaped. Today it is bordered by the city hall, a church and well-known buildings, and it has been a favourite place for walks, picnics and birdwatching for generations of Reykjavík residents.
Rising above the rooftops of central Reykjavík, Hallgrímskirkja is the city's most recognisable building. Its stepped concrete tower is shaped to echo the basalt columns found across Iceland, and the white façade is visible from almost every corner of the capital. Inside, the church is plain and airy, with a huge organ dominating the hall.
The beach was created in 2000 by pumping geothermal water into a lagoon and adding golden shell sand, so that the temperature is far warmer than the surrounding North Atlantic. The geothermal heating is produced by the city's hot water network. It is a fine example of how Reykjavík uses its geothermal resources for leisure as well as heating.
